Peterborough Marble and Granite Works has been creating engraved and carved stone work since 1849. Mr. Hubert J. Brennan established himself in his three-story house, right here in downtown Peterborough. Fine craftsmanship was a trademark of the Brennan family for three generations.
The Kaufholds, since acquiring the business from Mr. Brennan’s family in 1958, have continued this mind set of fine work to this current day. Monuments of yesterday and today being produced in our shop reflect the desires and artistic taste of the families who order them. Peterborough Marble and Granite Works wants to carry your dedications into tomorrow and for many years to come.
The Kaufhold family has a history rich in stone carving
Hans and Roberta Kaufhold were married in 1956, and soon moved to Peterborough where they purchased Peterborough Marble & Granite Works in 1958. Hans began stone carving at age 15 as an apprentice in his homeland of Germany. After immigrating to the United States, Hans was hired at the Vermont Marble Company in Proctor, Vermont. Here he met Roberta (Mutti), whose family was full of established marble cutters, both in Italy and at the Vermont Marble Company. Roberta worked in the company’s marble exhibit and her father worked along side Hans in the cutting sheds.
After moving to Peterborough, Hans and Roberta raised their six children, who have all worked at PMGW at various times. John, their eldest son, purchased the business in 1989 and continues to work along side his sister Valli and his two sons, Broderick and Alex.
In June of 2016, Hans and Roberta celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Look how much we've grown!
